Cheeseburger Gnocchi

Cheeseburger Gnocchi

” Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Pepsi ….. No Coke just Pepsi “

– John Belushi SNL –

It might not be a Burger but I’m sure this Cheeseburger Gnocchi would make John proud.

This is a very easy dish to put together if you spend the time to do your “Mise en Place”. The variable is whether you feel like making your own Gnocchi. If you feel ambitious you could try my Gnocchi Recipe.

starting the cheeseburger gnocchi prep

Start by measuring out your Ground Beef. Follow by dicing your Onion and crushing the Garlic. Next measure the Red Wine, Stock,Tomato Sauce, Cream and Horseradish into individual containers. Grab your can of diced Tomatoes. I love the smokiness of the Diced Fire Roasted Tomatoes I found recently at my grocery store. Mix the Paprika, Cumin and Mustard Powder, grate the Cheese and chop the Scallions and Parsley.

Now you might think that looks like a lot of work but the truth is it will cut your cooking time by 20%. All that prep work makes the cooking part so much easier.

to the pan

I like to start by toasting the Gnocchi in a little butter and Olive Oil over medium high heat. After I get some nice color on the Gnocchi I remove them from the heat. Add a little more oil to the pan, let the Oil heat up and add the Onions. Don’t forget to season with a pinch of Salt and Pepper. After the Onions start to become translucent, add the Garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Now add the Ground Beef, season again and cook until the meat is full cooked.

Hopefully by this point you’re finding it easy cooking with all your ingredients sitting next to you on the counter.

Once the Meat is cooked hit it with the Red Wine and reduce by half. Next is the Stock and reduce it by half also. At this point you can add the Canned Tomatoes, Tomato Sauce, Spices and Horseradish. Toss the Gnocchi back in and let everything Stew together for 5-10 minutes on low heat so the Gnocchi can soak up the Flavours.

To finish, right before serving add the Cream and Cheese so the Cheese has that yummy I’ve just melted vibe. Place nicely in the middle of your plate or serving platter and Garnish with Scallions and Parsley.

Grab a Pepsi ( or Coke I won’t tell John ) and enjoy this hearty Cheeseburger Gnocchi with the family.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp Butter
  • 2-3 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 300-400 g Gnocchi
  • 1 Onion Diced
  • 2 Cloves Garlic Crushed
  • 1+ Lbs Ground Beef Preferably extra lean fro this dish
  • 1/4 C Red Wine
  • 1/4 C Beef Stock Use Chicken if you have no Beef
  • 398 ml Diced Tomatoes Can
  • 200-215 ml Tomato Sauce From Can or 2Tbsp paste mixed with water
  • 1 tsp Paprika Smoked Paprika if you have it
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard Powder can Substitute 1 tsp Dijon
  • 1/4 C Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 C Scallions otherwise known as Green Onion, Chopped
  • 1/2 C Your favourite Cheddar or similar
  • 2 Tbsp Parsley Chopped
  • Salt & Pepper Seasoning

Instructions

  • Start by gathering up all your ingredients, chop and crush the Onion, Garlic, Scallion and Parsley. Measure out all the liquid ingredients into separate containers and combine all the Spices into one bowl.
  • Put your pan on med-high heat and let it heat up slightly. Add the Butter and 1 Tbsp of Oil to the pan. Once the butter has melted add the Gnocchi and toss. Make sure to keep tossing or stirring the Gnocchi so it doesn't burn. Once it has some light browning remove from the heat into a bowl.
  • In the same pan add the remaining Oil and Onions along with a pinch of seasoning. Sauté the Onion until just translucent then add the Garlic and cook for a further 1-2 minutes. Stir or toss regularly to prevent the garlic from sticking to the bottom and burning.
  • Add the ground Meat and another pinch of seasoning, cook until the Meat is fully cooked through.
  • Once the meat is cooked keep the temperature on high and add the Red Wine to Deglaze. Stir to remove any caramelized bits from the bottom of the pan.
  • Once the Wine has reduced by half add the stock and repeat.
  • Time for the Tomato Sauce, Fire Roasted Tomatoes and Spices. Add the Gnocchi back into the pan, reduce heat to low, cover, and let everything get happy together for 5-10 minutes. Stir once or twice to make sure nothing is sticking.
  • When it is time to serve increase heat to medium and add the cream and Scallions. Stir for about 1 minute so the Cream has time to Thicken up slightly.
  • Add the Cheese by spreading it round the pan ( it's not fare if one person gets all the Cheese ). After another minute when that cheese reaches that just melted phase scoop the Cheeseburger Gnocchi onto a platter or individual plates and garnish with the Parsley.
  • Crack a Pepsi or a Wobbly Pop and Enjoy. I think if I was going to have a wine it would have to be heavy enough to stand put to this dish. Maybe a Chianti.

Notes

There are some decent pre made Gnocchi's out there but for a truly amazing pillowy Gnocchi try clicking on the link above and making your own.
Use any Diced Tomatoes you have available, I happen to buy Fire Roasted because I love the extra smokiness they give.
